Waterfalls in a forest

Kanchanaburi

Full of natural attractions like rivers, caves, and waterfalls, Kanchanaburi is a province that offers an escape from the fast-pace of Bangkok city. It is an idyllic place for boat tours and water sports, including kayaking, canoeing, and taking river cruises. Visitors can expect to see Lawa Cave and its tiny bats, dazzling waterfalls, and magnificent flowers.
Huay Mae Khamin, shown above, is a stunning waterfall, where visitors can swim. Its source begins in the mountains east of the park and flows all the way down to the River Kwai Yai.

While still a beautiful setting, Konyu Cutting, or Hellfire Pass, gives visitors a bit of World War II history. It was one of the most infamous stretches of the Death Railway, where the Japanese army forced Allied prisoners of war and tricked asian laborers into cutting into the Tenasserim Hills to build a railway. Hellfire Pass got its name because the sight of the starving prisoners working at night by torchlight appeared like a scene out of hell. Now it is home to a museum memorializing the event. Visitors can hike through the cutting and reflect on the history of the location.
