The mountains make up one-fifth of the world's landscape and provide homes to at least one-tenth of the world's people. The world's highest peak on land is Mount Everest. It's 29,036 feet tall. About 80% of our planet's fresh water originates in the mountains. All 14 of the highest moutains in the world are found in the Himalayas. The rivers in some mountainous areas are permanently frozen; these are called glaciers.
