Social Causes and the Web

Helping Others

Philanthropy: "love of humanity" in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing "what it is to be human" on both the benefactors' (by identifying and exercising their values in giving and volunteering) and beneficiaries' (by benefiting) parts.

Instances of philanthropy commonly overlap with instances of charity, though not all charity is philanthropy, or vice versa. The difference commonly cited is that charity relieves the pains of social problems, whereas philanthropy attempts to solve those problems at their root causes (the difference between giving a hungry person a fish, and teaching them how to fish). A person who practices philanthropy is called a philanthropist.

Before the web...

There were multiple forms of printed and verbal communication used to spread the word about social causes. With the advent of the web, it became easier to inform the entire world of any causes of which one felt passionately.

There were newspapers, advertisements (print, radio, television), and word-of-mouth. Some churches might let their members know about some charity work they planned to do. Individuals may have gone door-to-door, or stood on the street or in a park, giving a speach about anything they deemed important.

How has the web changed fundraising efforts?

The web has created easier access for people looking for new social causes to back, as well as helping these causes and organizations find new supporters. It is a new world for fundraising!

Rather than relying on the people you can reach in-person, the web has access to billions of people around the world, who can help fund your causes. There is no longer a barrier due to distance between people and the places these cause call home. You can look at issues all around the world in just moments.
